Perk Basics

 

With the release of Shadowlands and entirely new source of skills, special actions and stats buffs was made available: the Perk Lines. The perk lines fall into three major groupings:

 

·        Profession Specific Perks

 

Profession specific perk lines are available to a single profession only. For the MP these are the Channel Rage and Soothing Spirits perk lines.

 

·        Group Perks

 

Group perk lines are available to more than one profession but not to all professions.

 

·        General Perks

 

General perk lines are available to all professions.

 

Perk Lines consist of a series of individual perks. Each perk trained in a line will buff a skill or stat by a certain amount, with the buffs from each perk stacking. For some perk lines, specific perks in the line may activate a Perk Special action. Some Perk Specials have a fixed effect but others will increase in power the more perks you train in the line after the special has been activated.

 

Perk lines can be trained by using Perk Points allocated in the Perk Window (hit shift-P to bring up the perk window). From level 1 to level 200 you will receive 1 perk point every 10 levels. From level 201 to level 220 you will receive 1 perk point every level, giving a total maximum of 40 perk points per character. Each perk trained in a line will cost you 1 perk point.

 

Each perk has a level requirement attached to training it.

 

Perks can be untrained in order to retrieve perk points and make them available for another perk. Only one perk may be untrained every 3 real time days (72 hours).

 

Selecting Perks to be trained

 

Perks offer a great deal of flexibility and choice in terms of choosing which ones to train. There are 69 individual MP specific perks available to the MP and 77 individual general perks available making a potential choice of 146 different perks to choose from with a maximum of 40 perk points at level 200.

 

The level requirements on training each perk reduce the selection of perks you can train at any particular point in time, but the choices are still very wide and will depend to a great extent on your personal gameplay or equipping needs. Still there are some broad recommendations and guidelines we can give to help you make some decisions.

General Perk Description

 

Soothing Spirits

The Soothing Spirits perk line buffs the MP for some Max HP and Max Nanopool for each perk trained. There are 10 perks in the line. It enables 3 specials.

 

 

Perk Special

Perk Special Description

 

 

Soothing Spirits

Perk 1 activates a perk special that causes the healing power of any heal pet that the MP casts to be increased by changing the heal nano equipped by the pet. It is not a perk action but simply a special that changes the heal pet passively. The power of the heal is increased by the heals is increased only by perks 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 10.

 

 

Spirit of Blessing

Perk 2 activates a perk special action “Spirit of Blessing” that is a team health heal. The power of the team heal rises with each further perk trained in the line.

 

 

Spirit of Purity

Perk 4 activates a perk special action “Spirit of Purity that is a team nano heal. The power of the team nano heal rises with each further perk trained in the line.

 

 

Perk Line Recommendation

 

 

The Soothing Spirits perk line is a must for every MP. The small HP and Nanopool buffs are much less important than the extra healing power given to the heal pet. The addition of the Team Heal and Team Nano Heal specials makes this the most important MP perk line.

Channel Rage

The Channel Rage perk line buffs the MP for some Max HP, Add All Def, Mat Cre, T&S and Nano Resist for each perk trained. There are 10 perks in the line.

 

 

Perk Special

Perk Special Description

 

 

Channel Rage

 

Perk 1 activates a perk special action “Channel Rage” which acts as an attack pet buff similar to a short duration evocation. The special buffs the Add All Off and damage of the pet for 60 seconds and is available every 3 minutes.

 

 

Perk Line Recommendation

 

 

The Channel Rage perk line offers its best value through the skills and stats buffs for the MP. In particular, the Add All Def and Nano Resist buffs are nice and the MC/TS buffs may be very useful in reaching a particularly good attack pet at some points in the MP’s life.

 

The Channel Rage special itself includes useful damage addition to the attack pet, but only a relatively small Add All Off buff. This means that although the special can add quite a bit of damage to the pets’ attacks it will not increase the likelihood of the pet hitting very much.

 

This perk line is probably most suited to PvP MPs at high levels, though may be of interest to lower level MPs at certain times in the MP’s life.

Blunt Mastery

 

The Blunt Mastery perk line buffs the MP for some 1 Hand Blunt skill with each perk trained. There are 4 perks available to the MP in this line.

Quick Bash

 

Perk 2 activates a perk special action “Quick Bash” which is a direct damage action recharging every 35 seconds. The power of the special increases with each further perk trained in the line.

 

 

Perk Line Recommendation

 

 

The Blunt Mastery perk line is not a key MP perk line.

 

The 1 Hand Blunt buff may be useful for equipping Creation Weapons or Damage weapons. The single perk special is a very weak one compared to most damage weapons and would be most useful in adding a special to the Creation Weapons. For the perk points invested the returns are not very great though.

 

Only train this line in order to be able to equip specific 1 Hand Blunt creation or damage weapons.

General Perk Description

 

Nano Doctorate

 

The Nano Doctorate perk line buffs all 6 nanoskills with each perk trained. There are 10 perks available to the MP in this line.

Shutdown Removal 1

 

Perks 7 and 10 activate perk special actions “Shutdown Removal 1 and 2” which remove any shutdown debuff from the NCU of the MP. Each of the two specials recycles every 60 seconds.

Perk Line Recommendation

 

 

The Nano Doctorate perk line is most interesting for its skills buffs. With the full 10 perks trained this perk line adds +100 to all 6 nanoskills. The Shutdown removal specials are of less interest to an MP on the whole other than perhaps in PvP.

 

However, since the MP has a great ability to buff his own nanoskills to high levels, the added benefit of the nanoskills buffs is probably most noticeable during the period between level 30 and level 100 where the large gap between the masteries and infuses buffs means that progression is more difficult and where there are many new nanos for the MP to reach with the buffs.

 

Only train this line as far as necessary in order to reach very powerful new nanos that will considerably improve your overall gameplay.

General Perk Description

 

Notum Source

 

The Notum Source perk line buffs the Intelligence, Psychic, Max Nanopool and Nano Delta of the MP with each perk trained. There are 10 perks available to the MP in this line.

 

 

Perk Special

Perk Special Description

 

 

Access Notum Source

 

Perk 1 activates a perk special action “Access Notum Source” which is a team nano heal. The power of the special increases with each further perk trained.

 

Blast Nano

 

Perk 4 activates a perk special action “Blast Nano” which debuffs the Nanopool of the target by 1100 points and debuffs all 6 nanoskills for -100 points. The special recycles every 1 minute 15 seconds when successful but becomes available 38 seconds after it is resisted. The power of this special is fixed. The Zap Nano perk special must be running on the target before this special can be used.

 

 

Stop Notum Flow

 

Perk 7 activates a perk special action “Stop Notum Flow” which debuffs the Nano Resist skill of the target by -800 points for 40 seconds. The perk recycles every 1minute and 30 seconds after a successful attack but is available 45 seconds after a failed attack. The power of this special is fixed.

 

 

Notum Overflow

 

Perk 10 activates a perk special action “Notum Overflow” which debuffs the nano vulnerability of the target by 15 for 60 seconds. The specials recycles every 6 minutes after a successful attack but is available 3 minutes after a failed attack. The power of this special is fixed.

 

 

Perk Line Recommendation

 

 

The Notum Source perk line is most interesting for its perk specials. The additional Nanopool and Nano Delta can be useful for MPs who cast heavily and the Int and Psy help with armour equipping, but it is in the specials that this perk line is strongest.

 

The Nano Resist debuff in particular is very powerful and the Team Nano Heal is also very useful.

 

For MPs who prefer to focus on casting rather than on weapons damage this perk line is very strong indeed. For those MPs who choose to focus more on weapons, the perk line is much weaker.

Pistol Mastery

 

The Pistol Mastery perk line buffs the Pistol, Flingshot and Weapons Damage of the MP with each perk trained. There are 5 perks available to the MP in this line.

 

 

Perk Special

Perk Special Description

 

 

Quick Shot

 

Perk 2 activates a perk special action “Quick Shot” which is a direct damage special recycling every 45 seconds.

 

 

Double Shot

 

Perk 5 activates a perk special action “Double Shot” which is a direct damage special recycling every 55 seconds. The Quick Shot perk special must be running on the target before this special can be used.

 

 

Perk Line Recommendation

 

 

The Pistol Mastery perk line is not a key MP perk line.

 

The Pistol buff may be useful for equipping weapons. The perk specials are weak though compared to most damage weapons. For the perk points invested the returns are not very great though.

 

Only train this line in order to be able to equip specific pistols and when you have perk points to spare.

General Perk Description

 

Starfall

The Starfall perk line buffs the Max HP, Max Nano and Nanoskills of the MP with each perk trained. There are 10 perks available to the MP in this line.

 

 

Perk Special

Perk Special Description

 

 

Dazzle with Lights

 

Perk 1 activates a perk special action “Dazzle with Lights” which is a ‘Blind’ debuff reducing the Add All Off and Weapons Inits of the target for 15 seconds. The recycle after a successful attack is 35 seconds and after a failed attack the recycle is 18 seconds. The power of the special increases with every further perk trained in the line.

 

Combust

 

Perk 3 activates a perk special action “Combust” which is a direct damage special. The target must have the perk special “Dazzle with Lights” running in their NCU for this special to be used. The power of the special is increased if the target has the Napalm Spray perk special running in their NCU. Success Recycle is 60 seconds. Failure recycle is 30 seconds.

 

 

Thermal Detonation

 

Perk 6 activates a perk special action “Thermal Detonation” which is a direct damage special. The target must have the perk special “Combust” running in their NCU for this special to be used. The power of the special is increased if the target has the Napalm Spray perk special running in their NCU. Success recycle is 60 seconds. Failure recycle is 30 seconds.

 

 

Supernova

Perk 10 activates a perk special action “Supernova” which is a direct damage special. The target must have the perk special “Thermal Detonation” running in their NCU for this special to be used. Success recycle is 1 minute 30 seconds. Failure recycle is 45 seconds.

 

 

Perk Line Recommendation

 

 

This is an interesting perk line for the MP mostly due to the specials although the small added HP and nanoskills are useful too.

 

The Dazzle with Lights blinding special is particularly interesting as a defensive measure while the three combining direct damage specials provide the MP with an opportunity to put together a very powerful “Nuke Alpha Strike”. The recycles on the direct damage specials are not too long either.

 

Since the direct damage specials do not interfere with weapons attacks, this may be a particularly attractive option for the weapons oriented MP. Also, the ability to add damage while focussing on debuffing with nano casting might make this attractive to MPs playing in a support role.

Theoretical Research

 

The Theoretical Research perk line buffs the Max Nanopool and Nano Programming skill of the MP with each perk trained. There are 10 perks available to the MP in this line.

 

 

Perk Special

Perk Special Description

 

 

Quark Containment Field

 

Perk 3 activates a perk special action “Quark Containment Field” which is a powerful unbreakable root lasting for 60 seconds. The Success recycle is 2 minutes 40 seconds. The failure recycle is 1 minute 20 seconds.

 

Accelerate Decaying Quarks

 

Perk 6 activates a perk special action “Accelerate Decaying Quarks” which is a direct damage and nanoskills shutdown debuff (-2000 to all nano skills) with 12 second duration. The success recycle is 1 minute 10 seconds. The failure recycle is 35 seconds.

 

 

Knowledge Enhancer

 

Perk 9 activates a perk special action “Knowledge Enhancer” which is a nano damage multiplier buff that adds 12% damage to any nano damage during its duration of 30 seconds. The recycle time is 4 minutes.

 

 

Perk Line Recommendation

 

 

The skills buffs in this line are only really of interest to a Tradeskill specialist MP who is focussing on very high Nano Programming. As such training the whole line is probably most useful for very high level MPs.

 

The first perk special in this line is a very powerful root and is one of the best crowd control elements in the Shadowlands. This perk is available at level 110.

 

The Nuke/Shutdown special is nice but not really worth the investment and the Nano Damage multiplier is of low power when combined with the MPs low minimum damage and small damage range nukes.

 

Recommendation is to train this perk line to perk 3 for the root and then only train it further at very high levels for tradeskill specialist MPs.

The following perk lines are a few of the general perk lines that have particularly interesting buffs or specials for the MP. This list is not exhaustive and many of the other general perk lines may be of use to specific MPs for particular reasons or playstyles. A full listing of general perks can be found in the detailed perk tables.

Enhance DNA

 

Enhance DNA buffs the Abilities and Body Dev with each perk trained. There are 10 perks available in this line.

 

 

Perk Special

Perk Special Description

 

 

Reconstruct DNA

 

Perk 5 activates a perk special action “Reconstruct DNA” which casts a small Heal over Time nano on the MP (Self Only). The duration of the HoT is 60 seconds and the special recycles every 6 minutes. The power of the HoT increases with each further perk trained in the line.

 

 

Viral Wipe

 

Perk 10 activates a perk special action “Viral Wipe” which removes any Damage over Time nanos on the MP (Self Only). The recycle on the special is 2 minutes.

 

 

Perk Line Recommendation

 

 

Enhance DNA is only really useful for the specific purpose of equipping particular armour or implants that need higher abilities. This perk line should be used only for the purposes of equipping and then the points allocated elsewhere.

 

PvP MPs may find both of the specials useful but in particular the DoT remover, however the high investment of perk points for relatively low return make this an unwise choice on the whole.

First Aid

 

The First Aid perk line buffs the Treatment and First Aid skill with each perk trained. There are 4 perks available in this line.

 

 

Perk Special

Perk Special Description

 

 

Heal

 

Perk 2 activates a perk special action “Heal” which is a small self-only heal which recycles every 4 minutes.

 

 

Perk Line Recommendation

 

 

First Aid is an interesting general perk line for the MP. The Treatment bonus is useful in equipping implants of course – but both Treatment and First Aid can be very useful indeed in terms of using HP and Nano recharging kits, stims, coils and spindles. In particular in the Shadowlands the ability to use more powerful versions of these tools can be very important both during battle and to reduce downtime.

 

The ‘Heal’ special is very weak though and not really of any consequence.

 

Solo specialist MPs may well find this cheap perk line to be an interesting option.

 

Also PvP focussed MPs may find the extra First Aid to be useful.

General Perk Description

 

Genius

 

The Genius perk line buffs the Intelligence, Psychic and Nanopool with each perk trained. There are 3 perks available in the line.

 

 

Perk Special

Perk Special Description

 

 

Regain Nano

 

Perk 2 activates a perk special action “Regain Nano” which casts a self-only Nano over Time nano which heals for 200 points every 2 seconds for 12 seconds – a total of 1200 heal. It recycles every 1 minute 20 seconds.

 

 

Perk Line Recommendation

 

 

Genius is a very interesting perk line for the casting focussed MP. The bonuses to Int and Psy are of relatively little use in general play although useful for equipping armour – so only the first two perks in this 3 perk line are really useful because the second one activates the special.

 

It is the perk special that makes genius particularly interesting for the casting focussed MP. The 1200 nano heal every 80 seconds can be a very useful tool indeed particularly during Shadowlands play.

 

For MPs whose playstyle focuses more on weapons damage alongside their pets, the perk line is not as useful.

 

 

Perk Line

General Perk Description

 

NCU Extensions

 

The NCU Extensions perk line buffs the Max NCU and Computer Literacy of with each perk trained. There are 8 perks available in this line.

 

 

Perk Line Recommendation

 

 

NCU Extensions adds NCU for the MP – which can be a very important commodity at various times in the life of the MP. The 8 perks add a max of 130 NCU and 100 Comp Lit.

 

MPs who are at a time in their development where they find NCU lacking may wish to train this perk line enough to fit an ‘optimal’ buff set.

 

High Level MPs who use hostile casting a great deal may wish to increase their ability to fully buff all 6 nanoskills in order to gain the highest possible nano attack rating.

 

High Level MPs focussed on Tradeskilling may find the extra Comp Lit particularly useful.

 

On the whole though, the investment of points in this perk line will tend to yield less in real terms than other uses for those points. This perk line should only be trained for very specific purposes.
